Contemporary Cuban culture at the University Library

University Library and Third Belgrade have a pleasure of inviting you to the evening dedicated to contemporary Cuban culture and society. Our guest of honour Her Excellency  Mercedes Martínez Valdés, Ambassador of Cuba to Serbia, will open the evening, followed by a presentation "Topics on contemprary Cuban culture and society through the programs of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba” by  Wilfredo Benítez, Executive Director of Ludwig Foundation of Cuba.

On Monday, May 7th 2012, the University Library in Belgrade had a pleasure of presenting a book „Summer of the Dancing Bear“ by Bianca Lakoseljac, Canadian writer and educator of Serbian origin.

Ms Olgica Marinkovic, Academic and Cultural Relations Officer with the Canadian Embassy in Belgrade, made opening remarks on longterm cultural and academic cooperation between Serbia and Canada as well as translation of Canadian literature in Serbian language.
Mr Uros Tomic, professor of English literature, University of Belgrade, conducted the presentation and discussion.

Bianca presented her collection of poetry „MemoirsofaPrayingMantis, a collection of short stories „BridgeintheRain and her first novel „Summer of the Dancing Bear“ which ignited many questions among the audience.

Bianca Lakoseljac is an author, educator, environmentalist, and a lover of arts and all creative endeavours. She holds an M.A. from York University and is the recipient of the Matthew Ahern Memorial Award in Literature. Over a ten year period, Bianca taught communication courses and technical writing at Ryerson University and Humber College in Toronto. She is a former president of the Canadian Authors Association (CAA), Toronto Branch.

A group of 17 European partner institutions, including University Library “Svetozar Marković”, have joined forces in the “European Newspapers” project and will, over the next 3 years, provide more than 10 million newspaper pages to the EUROPEANA service.
The European Newspapers project (funded under EC's CIP 2007 - 2013) aims at the aggregation and refinement of newspapers for The European Library and Europeana.

The project has started on 1st February 2012. The kick-off meeting of all partners of the project will take place on 1st - 2nd March 2012 in Berlin, hosted by the project leader - The Berlin State Library.

University Library "Svetozar Markovic"
has opened an exhibition on
Zaharija Orfelin (1726-1785),
one of the most notable Serbs in the eighteenth century,
regarding 250 years since publishing his song The Lament of Serbia.
He was an engraver, calligrapher, cartographer, writer, teacher, scientist,
author of schoolbooks, theological and nature history books,
historian, poet, maker of the calendar.
